At a global level, the way food is currently produced is severely damaging the health of the planet. Over 40% of the earth’s land mass, excluding deserts and icesheets, is used for agriculture. The use of land for food production, and the way it is produced, threatens the extinction of many thousands of species. Food production, food processing and food waste, together account for a quarter to a third of all green house gas emissions. In addition, poor nutrition is a major factor in many causes of ill health, including the most common forms of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. To protect biodiversity, reverse climate change and improve human health how we produce and consume food must change.
