🌱 August at Truro Community Patchwork Farm 🌱
It’s been another busy month in the gardens!
After weeks of drought and some seriously hot weather, the recent rain has been very welcome. 🌧️ Our gardens have certainly needed it! The dry conditions have slowed some growth, while flea beetle has caused major problems for our brassicas, destroying several sowings of broccoli, calabrese, kohl rabi and Oriental greens.
But there have been plenty of positives too! 💚
Our second volunteer day was a great success, with new volunteers joining us to refresh the soil and plant up the raised planters at the Waterfall Gardens on St George’s Road. We now have climbing beans, nasturtiums, chives, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes growing — hopefully the pumpkins aren't too late! 🎃
We’ve also planted Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), a fascinating traditional plant that can produce a natural lather and has been used historically for washing wool and in soaps and shampoos.
🌿 Our next Volunteer Day is Saturday 5th September, 10.30am–12.30pm at The Leats.
We’ll be helping to rescue and revive some of the planting that has struggled through the drought. Nigel will be taking the helm while Rob enjoys a well-earned break! 🍷😎
